B-School Series: Can I Borrow A Cup of Sugar?

Growing up with a feisty southern style momma taught me a few things in life like knowing where your roots are; respecting your elders, and hard work pays off. She taught me that time spent with family is a priceless gift and to be kind to your neighbors especially when they need to borrow a cup of sugar, cause you never know when you’re going to run out of sugar yourself. I always thought that was a funny expression, as a kid I never once saw my neighbors bring back the sugar they borrowed. I guess that really wasn’t the point though was it?

Taking this new journey to building a successful business often makes me think about what it is like to be neighborly, to invest in people, to give back to the community that I live in, and to genuinely take ownership of my place in this world. Getting out of the mindset of DRIVING, DRIVING, DRIVING business and into the right lane of what can I give to improve the lives of others? How can I best serve? Marie Forleo, a multi-passionate entrepreneur and creator of B-School, often talks about the importance of quality and not quantity. That the people we authentically interact with are what matters as our lives and passion for the work done, begin to intertwine with one another.

It is not the number of Facebook friends you have, the amount of likes you get on a blog, or the e-mail list with thousands of names on it that make a difference. It is truly down to the relationships that are nurtured, cared for, and grown over time that make up the fabric of a successfully thriving life and business. I wonder sometimes how much more connected the world would be if we just borrowed a cup of sugar more often? Showed up to an old friend’s house for a nice cup of tea and good conversation? Got back to the simplicities of generous acts of kindness that in my little town of Toutle might be pulling someone’s truck out of the mud or bringing the neighbors dog home that got lost.

How do you nurture the relationships in your life and work? What do you give without a second thought to what you may receive later on down the road?

Meet Leslie.  Some  call her Leslie.  Others call her Wonder Woman.  Everyone calls her an inspiration! Lover of all things Wonder Woman...including a pair of adult underoos she wore during her first Ironman 70.3 triathlon.  Mostly because training with Melanie moved her from one end of the health scale to the other.  When she started training in July 2012, she couldn't do a sit up or run a single mile.  She also thought green smoothies & protein bars were a waste of calories.  What a difference 9 months makes...

In May 2013 Leslie completed her first Ironman 70.3 event.  In December 2013 she run a 50K trail race.  AND...she now thinks green smoothies & protein bars are delicious.  Proof that anything is possible when you have the right team behind you & are ready to believe in yourself.
