B-School Series: Can I Borrow A Cup of Sugar?

Growing up with a feisty southern style momma taught me a few things in life like knowing where your roots are; respecting your elders, and hard work pays off. She taught me that time spent with family is a priceless gift and to be kind to your neighbors especially when they need to borrow a cup of sugar, cause you never know when you’re going to run out of sugar yourself. I always thought that was a funny expression, as a kid I never once saw my neighbors bring back the sugar they borrowed. I guess that really wasn’t the point though was it?

Taking this new journey to building a successful business often makes me think about what it is like to be neighborly, to invest in people, to give back to the community that I live in, and to genuinely take ownership of my place in this world. Getting out of the mindset of DRIVING, DRIVING, DRIVING business and into the right lane of what can I give to improve the lives of others? How can I best serve? Marie Forleo, a multi-passionate entrepreneur and creator of B-School, often talks about the importance of quality and not quantity. That the people we authentically interact with are what matters as our lives and passion for the work done, begin to intertwine with one another.

It is not the number of Facebook friends you have, the amount of likes you get on a blog, or the e-mail list with thousands of names on it that make a difference. It is truly down to the relationships that are nurtured, cared for, and grown over time that make up the fabric of a successfully thriving life and business. I wonder sometimes how much more connected the world would be if we just borrowed a cup of sugar more often? Showed up to an old friend’s house for a nice cup of tea and good conversation? Got back to the simplicities of generous acts of kindness that in my little town of Toutle might be pulling someone’s truck out of the mud or bringing the neighbors dog home that got lost.

How do you nurture the relationships in your life and work? What do you give without a second thought to what you may receive later on down the road?

B-SCHOOL SERIES: FLIP YOUR SCRIPT WITH A HAPPY SPATULA

In only a few short weeks I have managed to quit my regular 8-5 office job, become self-employed, join Full Circle Inspiration’s Fantastic Four, meet some amazing people doing extraordinary things, be entertained by a juggling waiter, buy a fully fledged membership to Andy Dooley’s bliss train, enroll in Marie Forleo’s B-School, chill with some pretty awesome guys that have high aspirations of owning an omelet bar one day, and flipping pancakes with my new smiley face spatula. The list can surely go on… but I think you get the point. Life changes in every breath, every A-HA moment, or even in the UH-OH moments when you realize you’re not as happy as you should be, could be, or deserve to be!

In the third week of Marie Forleo’s B-School the word AUTHENTIC really resonated with me. I am sure that we have all made compromises in our lives, sacrifices even. STOP! Be authentic to yourself, to the people around you, in your community, and especially in what you put out into the universe. In business, life, love, or the pursuit of happiness do not abdicate your true self to appease self-proclaimed majority status quo, because it is exhausting trying to be something that you are not and it robs your soul one little piece at a time.

There is nothing more liberating than giving yourself permission to be you and finding clarity in that being. A-HA moment this week! Lean in, be vulnerable, and love who you are. By putting positivity out into the world with the words you speak, the services you provide, products you create, and the relationships that you nurture… the pieces will fall into place as you gain clarity in your vision.

B-School Series: Cheating on My Husband With a Website

3/23/2014

If the headliner wasn't enough to get your attention... I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE WILL! As a new business partner at Full Circle Inspiration I am a beautiful mess. I have embarked on a path of launching three websites all at once. That's right not ONE but THREE! Go big or go home. Website development is the fine art of grabbing viewers with direct content while fighting the urge to throw up pages and pages of fluffy cotton candy... because let's face it who doesn't like talking about how AWESOME they are.

In my second week of Marie Forleo's B-School the hot topic is websites! What works, what stinks, and the vault of resources available to those who venture bravely into the wee wee hours of the morning trying to figure out how to put text on a picture. Thus, bringing me to the title of this blog. I have a confession, I have in fact been having an affair with website development for the past week! Staying up past my bedtime, tuning out the faint voice of my husband just so I can get a font right, and subjecting him to constantly testing the sites over and over again as I make changes.

Website development the DIY way, without coding expertise, requires patience, resourcefulness, marathon endurance, and you really have to enjoy doing it or you may find yourself throwing your computer out the window (or just buying a brand new one, oops). It has been a great week in B-School and below you will find my top three take aways for building a successful website for your business:

Picture
REMOVE THE BLOCKS FROM YOUR HEAD
Have you ever said to yourself "I don't know anything about computers?" or "I wouldn't know where to start?" It is easy to stray away from what is unknown or uncomfortable for the more familiar tasks that we all do well. However, with any task it is not your aptitude to complete it, but your ability to be resourceful while doing it. You can accomplish just about anything in this world by doing one of three things:
  1. Reading a book
  2. Searching Google
  3. Watching YouTube

FIND A BUILDER
Just like finding a builder to construct your dream home you have to find a web builder that fits your business needs and is user friendly. I have provided some suggestions of the top web builders below.
  • Wordpress
  • Squarespace
  • Strikingly
  • Shopify
  • Weebly
  • Wix

CHANNEL YOUR INNER KUNG FU PANDA
In order to become the master of your craft you must build a magical tool box of web resources. This includes favorite websites that will generate mailing lists for you, graphics tools, font finders, and top reference sites that you can use to set up your layout. Below I have included some of the tools that have been most useful to me:

  • Canva
  • Pic Monkey
  • Instaquote
  • Word Swag
  • A Beautiful Mess
  • MailChimp
  • Social Triggers
  • Lead Pages
  • Unbounce

The most important tool you have is believing in yourself!

Start Before Your Ready!

We have all wondered at one time or another how the inventor of sticky notes decided to get started or who thought that colorful miniature umbrellas in fruity cocktails would be an instant hit right? By human nature we evolve through the development of authentic ideas that are put into action. Neurons fire and collide gifting us all with the potential to become entrepreneurial Einstein's of the world.

That's right! We are all the director's of our own lives and the stories that we tell depend upon our ability to fuel our insights with action! As a newly enrolled student in Marie Forleo's eight week B-School program I am going to share week by week the top tools that I have found to be absolutely empowering and enlightening along my path to creating a business and life I love!

T's Top Three

Picture
Stop Waiting For Permission
It is always easier to wait for the approval and support that we feel is needed before taking the first step in a direction that is uncertain. Approval from family, friends, and ourselves constantly stops us all from being pulled forward. The only REAL permission you need is from YOURSELF, to be as GREAT as you really are!

Picture
Look Through Your Lens
Whether your on the sticky note path or fruity umbrella path they both have one thing in common, the vision. Part of my path with Full Circle Inspiration, Inc. involves looking through my lens, what vision of the world am I working to bring into reality, who am I trying to serve, and what am I trying to provide. With clarity in vision we are able to better inform insights with action which is a secret recipe for success!

Picture
Find Your Sweet Spot
One of the main reasons I love working for myself is that I get to DO the things that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE! The kicker is that people actually want to pay me for that service. This is known as the SWEET SPOT! Take the time to explore the blueprint of what you love doing so much that it doesn't even seem like work and align that with a service or product that people not only NEED but really WANT in their lives!

Meet Leslie.  Some  call her Leslie.  Others call her Wonder Woman.  Everyone calls her an inspiration! Lover of all things Wonder Woman...including a pair of adult underoos she wore during her first Ironman 70.3 triathlon.  Mostly because training with Melanie moved her from one end of the health scale to the other.  When she started training in July 2012, she couldn't do a sit up or run a single mile.  She also thought green smoothies & protein bars were a waste of calories.  What a difference 9 months makes...

In May 2013 Leslie completed her first Ironman 70.3 event.  In December 2013 she run a 50K trail race.  AND...she now thinks green smoothies & protein bars are delicious.  Proof that anything is possible when you have the right team behind you & are ready to believe in yourself.
